For more information on what environmental awareness is and the positive impact it can bring to your business, read our article The benefits of raising environmental awareness.

Why is Environmental Awareness Training Important?
Our training course takes an inclusive approach, helps promote a culture of sustainability and helps businesses to achieve their environmental awareness goals effectively.
The Environmental Protection Act 1990 aims to protect the environment with controls that work towards reducing air pollution, carbon emissions, and harmful waste disposal practices. All commercial waste must be stored, removed, and disposed of in line with the obligations covered in the act. The Climate Change Act 2008 is the basis for the UK’s approach to tackling and responding to climate change. It commits the UK to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. The Companies Act 2006 requires all UK quoted companies to report on their global energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in their annual Directors’ Report.

What does the Environmental Awareness course cover?
The course contains the following five topics:
1 – Climate change
We start by learning about climate change. You will understand the climate change process and its impact on the environment. You will learn about the role of greenhouse gases on our planet and how humans are causing a rise in these gases. The topic also covers how the carbon cycle works.
2 – International and UK government action
This topic is about actions being taken by governments and organisations around the world to reduce global warming and make systems sustainable for the future. You will learn about the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), COP conferences and the drive for Net Zero. The topic explains the terms carbon neutrality, carbon offsetting and carbon credits. It highlights UK legislation and taxes that target the environment.
3 – Energy efficiency
The third topic is about energy efficiency. It describes how your organisation, and you as an individual, can create a more energy-efficient workplace. You will learn about the benefits of energy efficiency. You will also learn about ways organisations can reduce energy usage for lighting, heating, water heating and IT equipment.
4 – Water
We move on to outlining the importance of water and ways to reduce water consumption. You will learn about the problems with water around the world and about water waste in the UK. The topic also covers water-saving techniques that businesses can use to save money and keep the environment healthy, as well as the legal responsibilities businesses have for their water waste.

Frequently Asked Questions
Becoming aware of how our business impacts the environment is the first step to reducing negative (and increasing positive) impacts on the world around us. On an individual level, we need a stable climate, abundant clean water, and unpolluted air to live a long and healthy life. On a community level, we know that a healthy environment can strengthen food security, reduce conflict over resources and prevent refugee crises. On a business level, environmental awareness can help us comply with the law, stay competitive, and make cost savings.
Environmental awareness can help companies save massive amounts of money on energy, water, and waste removal fees. Working for a company that genuinely cares about the planet can also give team members a sense of belonging and optimism, strengthening team bonds and reducing staff turnover. If a company genuinely does good for the planet, it can also have a competitive advantage. And by understanding how our business impacts the environment, we can make improvements to reduce the risk of reputational damage or legal repercussions.
You can promote environmental awareness at work through staff training, events, competitions, or setting up green initiatives. You could offer cheap bicycle rentals to employees, or you could put staff names in a hat to win prizes every time they participate in a carpool or walk to work. You could hold environmental film screenings at lunchtime with free popcorn, invite a local ecological charity to come and give a talk, or arrange one day off a month for staff to participate in a local beach clean-up or tree planting event. You could also appoint some green champions who identify areas of improvement to report back to managers and take steps to implement their suggestions.
Reducing our personal carbon footprint is important, and we can do this through actions like taking public transport or cycling rather than driving to work, turning off lights, and wearing a jumper instead of cranking up the heating. At the same time, the term carbon footprint was invented and popularised by British Petroleum as part of a marketing campaign. Realistically, there is only so much we can do alone while living and working in places that are not conducive to sustainability.
In addition to looking at your own carbon footprint, it can be most effective to look at larger-scale changes at work. As well as you turning off lights, could your business switch to green energy? As well as you wearing a jumper in winter, could your company properly insulate the property so that heating needs (and energy use) are reduced. Reusable coffee cups are great, but additionally, could your business become more circular and make products it sells out of waste streams instead of raw materials? Managers and team members will best achieve sustainable practices by working together.
Greenwashing is when a company exaggerates what they do for the environment to increase sales or improve its reputation. If you spend more money on marketing saying you’re eco-friendly than doing anything concrete to become more sustainable, or if you put eco-friendly on your packaging without a justification of how and why your products are more sustainable than a similar brand or product - you’re probably greenwashing.
