This DSEAR training course helps individuals understand the risks of dangerous substances and explosive atmospheres in the workplace. It explains control measures that must be in place to keep workers safe and provides general safety precautions workers can use when working with dangerous substances.

Dangerous substances like flammable liquids, gases, and dust can create explosive atmospheres, leading to fire or explosions. Accidents involving explosive atmospheres can be catastrophic, resulting in severe injuries and even death. However, these accidents can be prevented with proper planning and procedures.

The law requires employers to take reasonable steps to protect the health and safety of all employees. As part of this, employers should train their employees about the risks of dangerous substances and explosive atmospheres and ensure workers know how to work safely to minimise risks.

The course takes approximately 2 hours to complete.

Who needs DSEAR training?

This DSEAR training course is suitable for anyone who works, or manages work, in an environment where dangerous substances are present. Regulation 9 of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) states that where a dangerous substance is present at the workplace, the employer shall provide employees with suitable and sufficient information, instruction, and training on the appropriate precautions and actions to be taken by the employee.

Our DSEAR training is suitable for individuals who work in food processing and storage facilities, automotive and aircraft repair, woodworking workshops, agriculture, construction, and chemical, pharmaceutical, and textile manufacturing.

Course content

The online course covers the following 6 topics:

1 – Dangerous Substances

The first topic explains what dangerous substances are and why they are present in the workplace. It also provides examples of these substances and outlines why misusing or incorrectly handling them can be hazardous.

2 – Explosive Atmospheres

The second topic introduces you to explosive atmospheres. It explains what they are and where they can be found. You will also learn how dangerous substances can give rise to explosive atmospheres.

3 – Fires and Explosions

The third topic explains how fires and explosions involving dangerous substances and explosive atmospheres occur. It introduces the fire triangle and dust pentagon and provides examples of ignition sources often found in the workplace. Finally, it explains how human behaviour at work contributes to these fires and explosions.

4 – The DSEAR

Topic 4 explains the purpose of DSEAR and highlights some important duties placed on employers and employees. It also explains the relationship between DSEAR and EU’s ATEX Directives and how DSEAR relates to other health and safety regulations in the UK. This topic outlines when DSEAR applies and provides examples of activities covered under DSEAR. Additionally, you will learn about the principal steps in DSEAR risk assessments.

5 – Control Measures

In topic 5, you will learn about important measures to prevent fires and explosions linked to dangerous substances at work. This topic explains control and mitigation measures and outlines the priority order in which DSEAR requires them to be implemented. Additionally, you will learn about hazardous area classification and the requirements for equipment and protective systems for use in hazardous zones. You will also be able to identify the equipment suitable for these hazardous areas. Finally, this topic explains why it is important to consider work clothing in hazardous zones.

6 – General Safety Precautions

The final topic outlines practical safety precautions workers should take when they work with dangerous substances. In this topic, you will learn about safe practices for storage, handling, and use of flammable liquids, gases, and dust, as well as the risks of being careless around dangerous substances. Finally, this topic outlines immediate actions you should take in an emergency involving dangerous substances.

Course assessment

The course assessment consists of 20 multiple-choice questions. The questions are generated from question banks, which means they change each time a candidate takes the assessment. This makes the training suitable for initial and refresher training.

Also, each question provides useful feedback so learners can understand their mistakes and learn from them.

There are no limits on the number of attempts for the DSEAR assessment, allowing learners to take it multiple times until they feel confident that they have retained the course material.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dangerous substance?

Under DSEAR, a dangerous substance is any substance that can cause fire or explosion, such as petrol, solvents, propane, butane, LPG and dust from flour, sugar, wood, coal and metals.

What is an explosive atmosphere?

An explosive atmosphere is a mixture of air and a dangerous substance that could ignite and cause an explosion under certain conditions.

Do employees need specific training under DSEAR?

Yes, employers must ensure workers handling dangerous substances receive training on precautions they must take to safeguard themselves and others at work. This includes safe practices for handling, using, and storing dangerous substances in the workplace and emergency procedures they need to follow in case of an accident.

Who does DSEAR apply to?

DSEAR applies to all UK employers and self-employed individuals who store, use or produce dangerous substances as part of their work.

For information on what employers must do to comply with DSEAR, read our article What employers must do to comply with DSEAR

Do DSEAR regulations apply to small businesses?

Yes. Any business handling dangerous substances must comply with DSEAR, regardless of size.

If you are self-employed and store or use dangerous substances for work, you must comply with DSEAR even if you don’t have any employees.

What is ATEX, and how does it relate to DSEAR?

ATEX refers to two European directives that set the framework for controlling explosive atmospheres across the EU.

DSEAR were introduced in 2002 to implement ATEX requirements in the UK law. Since leaving the EU, the UK has retained these regulations.

The importance of DSEAR Awareness training

Dangerous substances can create highly reactive environments where even a small spark or heat from work equipment could lead to a catastrophic fire or explosion, resulting in severe injuries and fatalities.

If dangerous substances are present in your workplace, DSEAR awareness training is essential for keeping your team members safe. DSEAR training helps learners understand the risks associated with dangerous substances and enables them to recognise safety hazards in the workplace. Consequently, they are more likely to follow safety precautions and take the necessary steps to protect themselves and their colleagues from harm.
